Split Sheets: How to Protect Yourself When Collaborating on Music
by October 16, 2025Collaboration is one of the best ways to grow, but it can create problems if nobody agrees on who owns what. A split sheet is a simple document that prevents confusion, protects relationships, and makes sure everyone gets paid.

What Is a Split Sheet?
A split sheet is a written agreement between collaborators that lists who contributed to a song’s composition and what percentage of the song each person owns. Everyone signs it, ideally in the studio on the day the song is made.
What to Include
- Song title and date
- Each writer’s full legal name and artist name
- Contact information
- Performing rights organization and IPI number, if they have one
- Publisher information
- Ownership percentage for each writer, totaling 100 percent
- Signatures from everyone
Composition Splits vs. Master Ownership
A split sheet usually covers the composition: lyrics and melody, including the beat when the producer is a co-writer. Master ownership, producer fees, and producer points on the recording are often handled in a separate producer agreement. Keep both clear.
How to Decide Splits
Some teams split evenly among everyone in the room. Others split by contribution. There is no single right way. What matters is that everyone agrees and signs before the song is released.
Why It Matters
Without a split sheet, disputes can delay releases, freeze royalties, block sync deals, and ruin friendships. Distributors, publishers, and labels may also ask for split documentation before they work on a song.
Make It a Habit
Keep blank split sheets on your phone or in the studio. Make signing one a normal part of every session. Professionals will respect you for it.
