How to Collaborate With Producers and Featured Artists the Right Way
by October 12, 2025The right collaboration can take your music to a new level and introduce you to a new audience. The wrong one, handled carelessly, can create legal headaches and damaged relationships. Here is how to collaborate with producers and featured artists the right way.
RMG Empire insight: Great music still needs a plan. Roots Music Group builds release and marketing strategies for RMG Empire artists. See how we work.
Working With Producers
Understand Beat Leases vs. Exclusive Rights
A beat lease gives you limited rights to use a beat, often with limits on streams, sales, or usage, and the producer can lease the same beat to others. Exclusive rights mean only you can use it going forward. Read the terms carefully before you release a song, especially if you plan to push it seriously.
Clarify Credits, Fees, and Points
Agree on the producer fee, producer credit, publishing split, and any share of master royalties before release. Put it in writing.
Communicate Your Vision
Share reference tracks and explain the mood and energy you want. Clear communication saves time and money.
Working With Featured Artists
Choose Features Strategically
Look for artists whose sound fits the song and whose audience overlaps with the fans you want. A feature should add something real to the record.
Agree on Terms First
Discuss fees, deadlines, splits, and promotion expectations up front. Will the featured artist post about the song? Appear in the video? Perform it live?
Get Approvals and Clearances
Some artists need approval from their label or management before a feature can be released. Confirm this before you set a release date.
Use a Split Sheet Every Time
Every collaboration should have a signed split sheet. It protects everyone and keeps royalties flowing correctly.
Credit Everyone Correctly
Add collaborators correctly in your metadata. Featured artists should be in the featured artist field, and producers and writers should be listed in credits.
Promote Together
Plan joint content and coordinated posts on release day. Collaborations work best when both sides push the song.
