What Is a Sample?
A sample is a portion of an existing recording used in a new song. Even a short sample can require permission.
Two Permissions Are Usually Needed
Because every recording involves two copyrights, you typically need permission from the owner of the master recording, often a label, and the owner of the composition, often a publisher.
Consider Replays
A replay, or interpolation, means re-creating the music instead of using the original recording. That can remove the need for master clearance, but you still usually need permission for the composition.
Royalty-Free Samples
Many sample libraries offer sounds licensed for use in your music. Read the license terms carefully.
Clear Before You Release
Clearing samples can take time and money. Start early, or avoid uncleared samples on songs you plan to push seriously.
