How to Write a Music Press Release That Gets Opened

How to Write a Music Press Release That Gets Opened

December 24, 2025

Journalists, bloggers, and radio programmers receive a constant stream of emails. A clear, well-written press release helps your news stand out and makes it easy for media to cover you.

RMG Empire insight: Great music still needs a plan. Roots Music Group builds release and marketing strategies for RMG Empire artists. See how we work.

When Do You Need a Press Release?

Use a press release for real news: a new single, EP, or album, a music video premiere, a tour, a major collaboration, a signing, or a milestone. Save it for moments that matter.

The Structure

Headline

Make the headline specific and interesting. Include your artist name and the news. Example: “Atlanta Rapper Releases New Single Inspired by Growing Up on the Westside.”

Opening Paragraph

Answer who, what, when, where, and why in two or three sentences. A busy writer should understand the story immediately.

Body

Add context: the story behind the release, the sound, notable collaborators, and relevant achievements. Include one strong quote from you about the project.

Links and Assets

Include streaming links, a private listening link for unreleased music, a video link, high-resolution photos, cover art, and a link to your EPK.

Boilerplate and Contact

End with a short artist bio and contact information for press inquiries.

Email Tips

  • Write a short, specific subject line
  • Personalize the greeting and first line
  • Paste the release into the email body instead of only attaching it
  • Use links, not large attachments
  • Send two to three weeks before the release for most outlets
  • Follow up once, politely

Mistakes to Avoid

Avoid exaggeration, long paragraphs, generic mass emails, and pitching outlets that do not cover your genre. Research each outlet and send only to writers who make sense.

A press release works best as part of a wider pitching strategy. Read how to pitch music to blogs, radio, and curators.
