How to Prepare for a Studio Session and Save Time and Money

Studio time is expensive, and every minute you spend figuring things out is money gone. Preparing for a studio session helps you record better performances, work faster, and walk out with songs you are proud of.

Before the Session

• Finish your writing. Have lyrics completed and memorized.
• Rehearse. Practice with the beat until the flow, melodies, and ad-libs feel natural.
• Know your goals. Decide what you want to finish: one song fully tracked, or several demos.
• Prepare your files. Bring the beat as a high-quality WAV file, plus trackouts or stems if you have them, and a reference track.
• Confirm details. Confirm the time, rate, engineer, and what is included.

Take Care of Your Voice

Sleep well, hydrate, and warm up before you arrive. Avoid anything that dries out or strains your voice before recording.

During the Session

• Arrive on time and ready to work
• Communicate clearly with the engineer about the sound you want
• Record several strong takes of each section
• Limit guests who distract you
• Stay focused on the performance, not perfect mixing

After the Session

Ask for your session files and bounced rough mixes. Label everything clearly and back it up. Document credits and splits with anyone who contributed, using a split sheet.
