How to Release Music Independently: A Step-by-Step Checklist

December 5, 2025

Releasing music independently has never been easier to start and never been harder to do well. Anyone can upload a song, but the artists who break through treat every release like a project with a plan. This checklist walks you through how to release music independently the right way, from finished masters to release-week promotion.

RMG Empire insight: Great music still needs a plan. Roots Music Group builds release and marketing strategies for RMG Empire artists. See how we work.

1. Finish the Music Before You Pick a Date

Your song should be fully mixed and mastered before you set a release date. Rushed mixes are one of the most common reasons strong songs underperform. Get a second set of trusted ears on the record, check it on headphones, car speakers, and a phone, and make sure the master is loud and clean without distortion.

2. Lock In Your Artwork and Credits

Streaming platforms require square cover art, typically 3000 x 3000 pixels, with no blurry text, website links, or pricing on it. At the same time, collect every credit: writers, producers, featured artists, engineers, and publishers. Write down ownership splits now, not after the song takes off.

3. Get Your Metadata Right

Metadata is the information that travels with your song: artist name, track title, ISRC code, UPC, genre, release date, and credits. Small mistakes, like spelling your artist name differently on two releases, can split your streaming profile or send royalties to the wrong place. Read our guide to music metadata, ISRC and UPC codes before you upload.

4. Choose Your Distribution

A distributor delivers your music to Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, TikTok, Amazon Music, and other stores. Compare fees, payout splits, how quickly they deliver, and whether they offer extras like pitching support. Artists working with a label-services partner may get access to stronger distribution relationships than a self-serve upload alone.

5. Upload Three to Four Weeks Early

Upload your release at least three to four weeks before release day. That lead time gives stores time to process your music, lets you create a pre-save link, and lets you pitch the song to Spotify’s editorial team through Spotify for Artists, which requires unreleased music submitted at least seven days in advance.

6. Build Your Rollout Content

Plan a batch of content before the song comes out: short vertical videos, behind-the-scenes clips, lyric snippets, cover art reveals, and a release-day post. Our release rollout timeline breaks down what to post each week.

7. Update Your Profiles

Update your streaming profiles, social bios, website, and link-in-bio page so everything points to the new release. Consistency makes you look professional to fans, curators, and industry contacts.

8. Pitch and Promote

Send your song to playlist curators, blogs, DJs, and radio contacts who cover your genre. Personalize every pitch. On release week, post daily, engage with every comment, and ask your supporters to save and share the song.

9. Review the Numbers

Two weeks after release, check your analytics. Where are listeners coming from? Which content drove the most saves? Use what you learn to make the next release stronger.
