How to Make Money as an Independent Artist: 9 Revenue Streams
by November 16, 2025Streaming alone rarely pays the bills for independent artists. The artists who build sustainable careers stack several income streams. Here are nine ways to make money as an independent artist.
RMG Empire note: The business side decides who gets paid. Roots Music Group helps artists understand ownership, splits, and strategy as part of our artist development services.
1. Streaming Royalties
Streaming platforms pay royalties to the owner of the recording, usually through your distributor. Payments per stream are small, so streaming works best as one piece of a bigger picture. Note that Spotify only pays recording royalties on tracks that reach a minimum number of streams per year, which makes building real listeners even more important.
2. Publishing Royalties
As a songwriter, you earn separate royalties for the composition. These include performance royalties collected by a performing rights organization, and mechanical royalties. Many artists leave this money uncollected. Our guide to music royalties explains how it works.
3. Live Performances
Shows, festivals, private events, and opening slots can be major income sources, and they also sell merch and grow your fanbase. See how to book your first show.
4. Merchandise
Merch lets fans support you directly and turns them into walking advertisements. Print-on-demand makes it possible to start without inventory. Read our guide on selling artist merch, and check out the RMG shop for examples.
5. Sync Licensing
Sync means licensing your music for TV, film, ads, video games, and online content. Sync fees can be significant, and placements can introduce you to huge audiences. Clean metadata and instrumental versions make your music easier to license.
6. YouTube Revenue
Your music can earn money on YouTube through your own channel and through Content ID when others use your songs. Learn more in our guide to growing on YouTube.
7. Fan Support and Memberships
Some fans want to support you directly through memberships, exclusive content, or crowdfunding for a project. Offer real value in exchange.
8. Features and Services
Artists with skills can earn from features, songwriting, production, or session work for other artists.
9. Brand Partnerships
As your audience grows, brands may pay you to create content or appear in campaigns. Make sure the brand fits your image.
Build a Business Around Your Music
Treat your music as a business. Track your income, reinvest wisely, and protect your ownership. Learn about contract red flags before signing anything.
